ALL STEEL DECCAN Shamshir
Origin: Deccan
Date: 18th Century
Size: 34 inches
Ref: SD18027
Price: SOLD
An all steel example of an 18th century (possibly 17th) sword from the Deccan plateau.
The steel hilt is complete with knuckle guard and features horizontal bands executed in relief across the grip of the hilt with quilons terminating in palmettes in Deccani fashion.
The Shamshir type blade is of thick construction and is of pattern welded Damascus steel, struck with an undeciphered Islamic stamp.
Muhammad-quli Qutub, Shah of Golconda is seen holding a very similar hilt in the referenced miniature artwork c.1586-1590. Golconda was a Sufi state of the Deccan during the 16th and 17th centuries.
A thick fighting example of an early Deccani sword that would be of interest to seasoned collectors and connoisseurs.
